Beijing – Pekin

August 8th Dave and I took a flight (and what a flight, Dreamliner baby) to Beijing. Well technically to Doha and then Beijing but anyway.
First of all, Quatar Airlines rocks. And for me to say that, it really must rock. I m terrified of flying. But i must say that free Champagne helps 🙂
We arrived on the 9th in the afternoon and had 7 days in front of us.

We stayed at the Red Lantern Hotel, it’s a really authentic place in the middle of a hutong.
I’ll  be totally honest the hutongs have been a huge chock for me (adding to the humidity and temperature off the charts). I don’t know what i expected,i dont’ think i really expected anything, just…not…that. I don’t mean to sound…judgmental or just..European coming to China thinking im better than everybody else but i was really chocked realising how poor those people actually are and how they actually lived. I had a strong reaction the first 2 or 3 days, felt extremely overwhelmed. I was kind of over dramatising everything, i was terrified to get sick, i couldn’t let myself go and truly enjoy the experience. What a pitty. Thank God that didn’t last.  I learnt to enjoy the experience. And what an experience ! I mean, in 6 days i stand in the Forbidden City, on Tiananmen square, i wandered in the summer palace,  i climbed the Great wall, saw a 17 meters Buddah carved in one tree and got a wonderful cooking class.

Le 8 aout dernier avec David nous avons pris l’avion (et quel avion, le Dreamliner s’il vous plait) pour Pekin. Enfin, pour Doha puis Pekin.
Tout d’abord je tiens à dire que Quatar Airlines est genial. Et pour que je dise cela d’une compagnie aérienne, moi qui est une trouille bleue de l’avion, il faut vraiment que ca soit quelque chose. Il faut dire que le champagne à volonté aide beaucoup 🙂

Nous sommes restés à l’auberge  Red Lantern Hotel, un petit hotel familiale authentique au coeur d’un hutong.
Pour être tout á fait honnête, les hutongs ont été un veritable choc pour moi (en plus de la température et de l’humidité battant des reccords). Je ne m’attendais pas à ca. Je ne sais pas à quoi je m’attendais, à rien, mais pas à ca. Loin de moi l’ídée de paraitre pleine de préjugés mais j’ai été extrèmement choquée de réaliser comment ces gens là vivaient. Les 2-3 premiers jours j’ai été complètement submergée. Je dramatisais tout et été certaine que j’allais mourir à tout moment. Ridicule. Heureusement après quelques temps j’ai réussi a apprécier cette aventure. Et quelle aventure ! En 6 jours j’ai parcouru la Cité Interdite, je me suis tenue sur la place Tiananmen, je me suis promenée dans le Palais d´été, j’ai escaladé la Muraille, j’au vu un Buddah de 17 mètres sculpté dans un seul arbre et j’ai recu un merveilleux cours de cuisine.

It was kinda foggy that day but the place was still impressive. Not the best idea to go there on a weekend though, tones of people. What i enjoyed the most was the 5 marbles bridges representing the 5 virtues of humanity according to Confucius, over a river shaped as a jade belt.

C’était assez brumeux ce jour là mais ca valait tout de même le coup de se perdre dans les méandres de cette ville interdite. Par contre, à éviter le dimanche si on veut eviter la foule de touristes. Ma partie préférée? Les 5 ponts de marbres représentant les 5 vertues de l’Humanité selon Confucius au dessus de la rivière en forme de ceinture de jade.

The wall. What an amazing day. I was sick, i had fever, but it didn’t matter. We took the 867 bus (which is a pain in the ass to find, totally hidden outside/behind the bus station) at 8 in the morning and after a 3h drive (in a crowded bus with no AC) we arrived at the foot of the Mutianyu part of the wall. The one where you can go up on a chair lift (great view) and go down on a toboggan (i know, sounds totally misplaced but i have to admit it’s a LOT of fun). We were surprised at how few people there was. This part of the wall is less touristy than Badaling and since most people are part of guided tour then leave after a couple of hours and at some point we had the wall for ourselves, or so it felt. Especially after we passed the point where tourists are not supposed to go cause the wall has not been taken care of at all. Dave was over excited. He actually recorded a movie filming in front of him like an explorer and you can distinctly hear me begging to stop and go back. We went back to Beijing by sharing a “cab” with a german couple for 2 euros per person and catching the 916 bus, was much faster.

La Muraille. Quelle journée ! J’étais pourtant fiévreuse ce jour là mais honnêtement ce n’est pas ce dont je me souviens. Nous avons pris le bus 867 (pas facile à trouver celui là a l’extérieur de la gare routière) à 8h du matin et après 3heures de route dans un bus bondé sans clim nous sommes arrivés au pied de la Muraille partie Mutianyu. La partie sur laquelle on accède en télésiège (super vue) et on redescend en toboggan (ok ca n’a pas grand chose à faire là mais c’est bien rigolo). Nous avons été surpris par le peu de touristes présents. Nous savions que cette partie du mur était moins fréquenté que Badaling et apparemment la plupart des gens qui viennent jusqu’à Mutianyu sont en groupes organisés et repartent dès le début de l’après midi, du coup à certains moments nous nous sentions seuls au monde. Surtout après avoir dépassé l’endroit après lequel les touristes ne sont pas censés continuer car le mur n’a pas du tout été entretenu et peu être très dangereux. David était aux anges. Il a fait un film ou l’on voit cette partie sauvage et ou l’on m’entend supplier de repartir dans l’autre sens. Pour le retour nous avons partagé un “taxi” avec un couple d’allemands (pour 2euros par personne) puis pris le bus 916, beaucoup plus rapide et avec la clim en prime.

Getting your head shave in a hutong barbershop. Funniest and dumbest idea ever. The women there were extremely nice and amused by our presence (as well as the people passing and looking through the window), they wanted to take a picture with us afterwards. It costed around 1.5 euros and it was perfectly done. It just hit us afterwards that we had no idea how clean those blades were.

Se raser la tête, une idée rigolote qui est aussi bien stupide. Les 2 femmes dans ce mini salon étaient extrêmement gentilles et très amusées de notre présence (ainsi que les passants qui s’arrêtaient pour regarder par la fenêtre), elles ont voulu prendre une photo avec nous après la coupe. Ca lui a couté 1.50 euros et c’était exactement ce qu’il voulait. Ce n’est qu’après coup qu’on s’est dit qu’on ne savait pas trop si les lames étaient bien propres…

Definitely the best day. Learning how to make dumplings and noodles !

TIPS

Forbidden City/Cité Interdite
entrance for 1 person is 60 Yuan around 7.3 euros  (summer2013) / Entrée pour 1 person 60 yuan , environs 7.3 euros (Eté 2013)
Count at least 2 hours to do the squares/halls and garden / Prévoir au moins 2 heures pour tout faire
I personally was disappointed to not be able to go inside the halls / Un peu décue personnellement de ne pouvoir entrer dans les différents “halls”

Summer Palace

Take the “Through tickets” so you can get in everywhere, it’s worth it. / Ne pas hésiter à prendre les “Through tickets” qui permettent d’avoir accès à tout une fois dans le parc.
By mistake we entered by a side entrance and exited by the main entrance, it was such a great mistake, the main entrance starts with the little “city” and it’s a great way to end the visit ! Don’t hesitate to buy a map, it’s so big you’ll definitly get lost / Un peu par erreur nous sommes entrée par une porte sur le coté du parc et non pas par l’entrée principale. Cette entrée commence avec la jolie petite ville, et finalement c’était super de terminer par cela.
Count at least half a day there, it’s really big and there’s tones of stuff to see / Prévoir au moins une demi journée 
To get there: take subway line 4 and get off at Xiyuan Station and walk to the East Gate entrance / Pour y aller, métro ligne 4 et sortir à Xiyuan, marcher quelques minutes pour trouver la porte est.

Lama Temple
Home of the 17 meters high Buddha carved in one piece of wood / C’est là que vous trouverez un magnifique Buddha de 17 mètres taillé dans un seul arbre

The wall/ La Muraille
The price for the wall itself is 45 Yuan for 1 person – About 5.45 euros / Prix pour la Muraille 45 Yuan soit 5.45 euros par personne (Eté 2013)
The price for the lift up and the toboggan down is 80 Yuan per person- About 9.70 euros / Le prix pour le télésiège et le toboggan 80 yuan par person soit 9.70 euros (Eté 2013)
to get there: bus 867 leaves at 7am and 8.30 am from Beijing and from the wall at 14.00 and 16.00 / Pour y aller: Bus 867 qui part à 7h et 8h30 de Pekin et repart de la Muraille à 14h et 16h.
the bus stop is tricky to find, you have to get to Dongzhimen station but the stop is not inside the station with all the other buses, it is actually behind it, you have to walk around the station and find another bus depot. The 867 stop should be the last stop. / L’arret de bus n’est pas super simple à trouser, il faut aller à la gare de Dongzhimen mais le bus n’est pas dans le dépot principal sous la gate mais dehors, derrière la gate.
You shouldn’t let the bus timetable shorter your time on the wall, you can easely hop on a “taxi” that can get you to the nearest city, Huairou and from there catch the 916 back to Dongzhimen station./ Ne laissez pas les horaires de retour du bus dicter le temps que vous passerez sur la Muraille, vous pouvez très facilement prendre un “taxi” jusqu’à la petite ville de Huairou et de là prendre le bus 916 pour retourner à Dongzhimen.

Mansion of Prince Gong
Try to go early so you skip the crowd of tourists. / Le matin si possible pour eviter la foule

Beijing Drum Tower
Entrance for 1 person: 20 Yuan aout 2.4 euros / Entrée pour une personne 20 Yuan soit 2.4 euros
They have Drum show during the day every hour  and / or half hour  / Il y a des petits “show” toute les heures / demi heures.
